Artist's Statements
The Observations Series

I believe there is much room for exploration in the continually expanding idioms for art. My prints draw on my background of painting, drawing, sculpting, and printmaking and translates those media to shaped canvasses and giclée prints. I am attempting to express myself in new ways within a relevant art historical context. The print series relates directly to art that has been produced through more traditional media, but they take advantage of a relatively newer technology that has characteristics of its’ own.

I don't see it as a replacement for mezzotints, lithographs, serigraphs, or engravings. I see it as a relatively new medium that became available through newer technology, just as all other media have come to exist.

For this series I made drawings and paintings on paper and then scanned them into the computer. I bring them into Photoshop

and add other elements by drawing on a digital tablet as well as creating vector art drawn with the pen tool. I make many of

the shapes that I draw into custom brushes in Photoshop which I can brush with as well as use as stamps. I then combine the elements to create a composition built on layers. Once I have what I like I print them on 100% cotton etching paper using a

high end gićlee printer with archival inks.

This is a series of studies in color relationships, rhythmic composition, interconnections, and playful movement resulting from

micro and macro observations of nature. The compositions are an abstract expression of meaningful and

dynamic characteristics observed in nature.
